Heritage Banners is a specialised workshop dedicated to recreating historical flags using traditional hand weaving, natural dyeing, and embroidery techniques. Our team researches original flags from museums, archives, and historical collections to understand the materials and methods used. We work with museums, private collectors, and historical reenactment groups to produce flags that meet strict authenticity standards. Each project begins with a consultation to determine the specific historical period, design, and intended use. Our process is transparent and documented, allowing clients to see the steps involved from fiber selection to final embroidery. We do not mass-produce; each flag is made to order with care and attention to historical accuracy.
The use of natural dyes is essential for achieving the exact colors found on historical flags. Modern synthetic dyes produce hues that are too uniform and bright, lacking the subtle variations characteristic of pre-industrial textiles. Heritage Banners sources madder, woad, cochineal, and other traditional pigments. Each batch is tested to match documented color references. This approach not only ensures visual accuracy but also respects the historical craft knowledge passed down through generations.
